The ELTE–NFI University Film Club screening and discussion series continues. We welcome university members from all ELTE faculties.
In December 1956, Dániel Szerencsés and his friend Gyuri Angeli decide to leave the country. Dániel is rushing to catch up with his girlfriend, who is leaving for Vienna, while Gyuri has to flee because he took part in street fighting during the revolution. Even the train ride is risky, since nearly every passenger is heading for the border just like them, openly discussing their plans, while identity checks are routine – anyone who looks suspicious is taken away without explanation. In a hotel in a small town near the border, people who wish to leave the country are waiting for a guide. On their last night together, the group decides to have a little fun before the smugglers’ trucks arrive.
After the 1956 Revolution, approximately 200,000 people left Hungary. The film offers a rich array of character types among those leaving Hungary. In the light of the 1956 Revolution, the film examines not only whether it is worth leaving or staying, but also what sacrifices have to be paid for doing so.
