Knight of the TV-screen (film by Bácskai Lauró István, 1970)

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club screening and discussion series continues. We welcome university members from all ELTE faculties.

The film is a biting satire on media culture and consumer society. A simple factory worker, Károly Prohászka is chosen to play the historical hero „Knight Gyula” in a popular television series. The series becomes a sensation overnight, causing the viewers to completely confuse the actor with the virtuous hero he portrays. As the expectations of the media and the public spiral out of control, Károly realises that his on-screen persona has completely taken over his private life.

What should we do with national heroes if we want to rewrite their stories over and over again? To what extent can history be shaped to meet the demands of the present? Who decides how we tell the story of the past?
