In 2025, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences celebrates its 200th anniversary, honoring members like physicist Zoltán Bay, who made lasting contributions to both the Academy and scientific progress. Bay pioneered key technologies such as atomic counting and lunar radar detection, and played a role in the resistance during World War II, earning high honors. His innovations in measurement science laid the groundwork for advancements in space exploration and GPS, and his legacy is preserved in university archives.

The Hungarian feature film Cold Days will be screened in the framework of the ELTE Carpathian Basin Hungarian Summer University. In addition to the participants of the Summer University, the event is open to all ELTE citizens.
According to our tradition, this year we joined the Night of Museums series of events, which included craft activities, concerts, film screenings, guided tours, restoration, fire enamel and calligraphy workshops, as well as a Mór Jókai Memorial Exhibition.
Krisztina Tóth's study „Archive on the Edge of the City” was published in the 2025/1 issue of the Archives Review, which presents the operation of the archive site at Maglódi út 8 between 2005 and 2024, its infrastructural and professional development, and the history of the building.
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025, to which ELTE is also associated with several scientists and teachers. A prominent example is Lipót Fejér, the outstanding mathematician who gained international recognition for his research on Fourier series and who was elected a full member of the Academy in 1930. His life story – from his roots in Pécs, through studies in Budapest and Berlin, to his American lecture tour – is still a treasure in the ELTE archives.
The main goal of the ELTE Heritage Coordination is to preserve the cultural heritage of the university, which was supported by the purchase of special equipment and storage for eight organizational units in 2024. The purchases included acid-free boxes, archiving supplies, and protective equipment for the preservation of manuscripts, books, photographs, and other valuable documents. In addition to the support of the National Cultural Fund, some pieces of the University History Collection, belonging to old university uniforms, were also restored.
Due to the Night of Museums, the library services of the ELTE University Library and Archives will be inaccessible on Saturday, on the 21st of June 2025. Everyone is welcome to join our programmes starting at 15.00.
