Social and political dimensions of Turkey in view of the past and the present day

Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies

Aim of the conference, entitled "From empire to mid-power - Social and political dimensions of Turkey in view of the past and the present day", is to make Turkey's current issues more intelligible to the wider public, casting light on political and social changes of the country through the 20th century. Raised on ruins of former Ottoman Empire, the country has to face great challenges in the next decade, having the aims to become a partner of the USA, a member state of the EU and the flagship of the Muslim world, simultaneously. The purpose of the presentations is to reveal the democratic changes, military and political ambitions, challenges in internal and foreign affairs of Turkey, a country striving for a mid-power status; furthermore its improving relationship with Hungary.
